Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Darmstadt became home to many technology companies and research institutes, and has adopted the title “city of science” since 1995. It is well known as a high-tech center in the vicinity of Frankfurt Airport, with important activities in spacecraft operations, chemistry, pharmacy, information technology, biotechnology, telecommunications and mechatronics.
The Technische Universität Darmstadt is one of the most important technical universities in Germany and is well known for its research and teaching in the Electrical, Mechanical and Civil Engineering disciplines. Darmstadt’s significance as a city of culture is mainly based on the Artists’ Colony founded in 1901 by the city’s last grand duke, Ernst Ludwig, which made Darmstadt inter-regionally famous for Art Nouveau.
Darmstadt is located in the southern part of the Rhine Main Area and only 20 minutes away from Airport Frankfurt International. Many excellent hotels are available at the city center.
The Darmstadtium is an event center created with the primary aim of serving the innovative powers of science and business as a meeting place for the exchange of ideas and inspiration. The name Darmstadtium is derived from the chemical element “darmstadtium”, which was created for the first time in 1994 at the GSI Centre for Heavy Ion Research in Darmstadt. It is located in the very center of Darmstadt.
